How to regain flexibility after 50: simple amazing habits

Would you like to regain flexibility and have a pain free life? If your answer is yes, then you are reading the right post! Over the years, our muscles begin to tighten so it is very important to stretch them daily and have an active life. Have you ever noticed , when for example you walk in the street , so many elderly people shuffling? Well, the reason is loss of flexibility in their hips but also the muscles which support that area weaken with lack of exercise. Realistically talking most of the time people have lots of excuses on why they are not stretching or exercising but both of them are important for our well-being. Increasing your range of flexibility can bring lots of benefits for our overall health. Let’s discover them first!

  • Improves posture and balance

  • Improves your sport performance

  • Improve your quality of life by making daily tasks easier

  • Decreases muscle soreness and pain

  • Decreases the chance in having injuries

  • Improves your sleep

  • Improves your mood

  • Decreases the chance of falls

These benefits which have just been listed of course are the most important but there are so many more. As I have just previously mentioned, people tend to find different excuses on why they don’t stretch, or attend yoga or Pilates classes etc. Guess what? We all have time to do everything we need to do and usually that comes from bad time management . Sometimes that comes from spending too much time doing one thing, getting up late, procrastinating , talking on the phone etc. We have the same time as most successful people in the world who still have to work full time, have responsibilities and still have time to spend with their family. Check out the post "14 secrets on how to become successful" . We all have 24 hours a day and we should at least spend 20 minutes a day stretching. We can’t have the dream healthy life if we keep neglecting our body or like some people do a workout like for example a cardio and not even spend 5 minutes stretching. A way to resolve that is to do a workout and a stretching class together such as joining a Yoga, Pilates or Dance class. Tao Porchon-Lynch started competitive ballroom dancing aged 87 and she appeared on American´s Got Talent aged 96!

Another common reason on why people would not stretch is because they feel too shy to start a Yoga or Pilates class especially if they have never done anything like that before. Do not feel like this because what you need to think about is that we all have to start somewhere. In my case I started ballet at 21 years old but in the ballet world that’s quite late if you want to do it seriously as a dancer and achieve a teaching diploma from it. So don’t hesitate to start a class and just go for it.

Lastly, remember that even if you stretch often that will not be enough as you’ll need to have a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and have an active daily life too. Movement especially is considered the key as that helps to lubricate our joints and keep our muscles flexible and strong.
